US Open HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The US OPEN

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. It's getting harder and harder to contain excitement for what we have in store this week as the US Open makes it first voyage to the mystical Los Angeles Country Club. The 123rd edition of the United States Open will feature all the stars trying to take on the recently renovated and restored Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford gem tucked in Hollywood.LACC features an extensive variety of golf holes that is going to be a complete test and examination of a players skill. My gut feel is that the scoring may be a bit better than we are used to in regards to USGA history, although I don't think that is any indictment at the quality of the golf course. The OG George Thomas made his mark in Southern California, I cannot wait to see what LACC has to offer us this week. For a complete, in-depth preview, check out the Tour Junkies official Rundown here. Here are some notable things to keep in mind about LACC:

  • The fairways seemingly offer a good bit of room off the tee. However, if you want to make birdies, you need to position your ball in the proper landing zones to have a good look and shot at the pins.

  • The Barranca will be featured and talked about extensively. It's basically a roulette wheel if you end up there. You can be totally fine or totally f*cked!

  • We have not seen Bermuda grass rough at a US Open since 2015 and the pros absolutely hate Bermuda rough. It's completely unpredictable and really throws off the players who are used to playing specific numbers and trackman golf. You want a good feel player and shotmakers out of this stuff.

  • Multiple players have referenced Augusta National when talking about the speed, size, and slope of the greens. They are also a blend of Bent Grass which is rather unique for Southern California.

  • The closing stretch of holes 16-18 features (3) par 4's that combined play over 1,500 yards. All monsters. How you play these holes could likely determine the champion.

  • LACC features quality risk/reward options often, most notably the drivable par 4 6th hole.

  • The greens are protected by a thick blend of bermuda and whispy fescue grass that will likely lead to some big scores and embarrassing chunks for players. ARG green is always a differentiating factor in major championships that should not be ignored at LACC.

While there is no historical course data on LACC, DataGolf has put together the following course fit plot based on estimated derived from past US Opens with similar hole yardages to LACC:
