RSM HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The RSM Classic

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. The boys are buzzin in Sea Island this week and the mafia will be in full effect. The TJ team is lucky to have close relationships with many of these players and caddies and will do our best throughout the week to provide course insights, pertinent notes, and other details as they come to help your screens become green and bets cash! We have by far the best field of the Fall swing this week set to touch down in St Simons in what will once again be played across 2 golf courses, The Seaside and Plantation Courses. As DB Correctly noted before last years event, with the renovations to the Plantation Course, both now play very similar in terms of difficulty and what they ask of player to succeed. For a complete breakdown of the course and field this week, make sure to check out the Rundown. Here are my some of my notes and things to keep in mind this week:

  • In 2019 and 2020 (post Plantation renovation), Plantation only played a total of about .17 strokes easier than Seaside. Last year both courses played to a -1.3 scoring average for the 1st 2 rounds. Keep that in mind with DFS stacks, ownership leverage, showdown plays, etc.

  • The average green size on Plantation is 1,000 sq ft smaller than Seaside.

  • Seaside sees an average of 75% in terms of fairways hit (way above Tour avg). The GIR% rate is over 75% (way above Tour avg). This leads to quite the putting contest. Scrambling doesn't matter in terms of predicting performance at Sea Island.

  • Course typically plays very soft and not much run-out on fairways. Both courses feature Rye-grass fairways.

  • Average fairway width on Seaside is over 40 yards (some of the widest on Tour). However, 10.5% of missed fairways result in a penalty stroke (top 3 most penal on Tour).

  • Plantation is a bit narrower and treelined, many players have compared it to Harbour Town as having a more traditional Carolina Vibe.

  • Both courses are very short with wide fairways, so any player can compete off the tee even if they lack the pop in the bat.

  • The key is just hitting a ton of greens and looking for players who are historically strong putters on Bermuda Grass.

  • Top 8 in SG over expectation with atleast 12 rounds are: Kisner, Gay, McCarthy, Landry, Streb, Horschel, List, Conners

  • Bottom 8 in SG over expecation with atleast 12 rounds are: Kang, Stallings, Streelman, Hubbard, Malnati, Baddeley, Cink, Kuchar

  • Ben Griffin shot a 59 last summer from the tips on Plantation to break his own record of 62. G Sigg has the course record at Seaside with a 58!
