Rocket Mortgage HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The Rocket Mortgage Classic

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. The PGA Tour makes it way to the midwest for the 5th consecutive year to play the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan this week. It's an old school Donald Ross design that provides relatively easy scoring conditions and the ability for players with varying skill sets to compete. Tony Finau is the defending champion but this is the event where we also saw a Monday Qualifier in Nate Lashley win the event in the opening year. For an event that comes on the heels of a Major Championship and an elevated event series Travelers Championship, we actually have a pretty solid field this week all things considered. Several players in search for valuable Fedex Cup points and Ryder Cup status have arrived in Detroit in hopes of getting to -25 under par this week on a wet golf course ripe for the picking. For a complete, in-depth preview, check out the Tour Junkies official course preview Rundown here. Here are some notable things to keep in mind about Detroit Golf Club:

  • Last year nearly 47% of all approach shots came from inside of 150 yards. Despite having longer total yardage than last week, you will end up hitting more wedges here this week.

  • 8th easiest scoring course on the schedule last year, which should play even easier given soft and wet conditions in the area.

  • The fairways are slightly narrow, but have been penal to those who miss over the past 4 years.

  • This is undeniable a bomb and gouge approach by certain players that has been deployed with success at this event.

  • That said, we have also seen several short accurate players have success as well: Kisner, Armour, Redman, Merritt, Willett, etc.

  • Greens are a blend of Bentgrass/POA mix but word from caddies is they putt more like POA.

  • Smallish greens with traditional Donald Ross design including run offs on the fronts and multi-tiered landing zones.

Here is the radar plot from DataGolf on Detroit Golf Club:Here is a look at last seasons approach shot distribution at this tournament:
