The Open HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The Open

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool.Wave stacks, knee high fescue, and coastal wind gusts that can flip at the drop of a hat...It's Open Championship week! The best in the world have made their way off the coast of Western England to Hoylake and Royal Liverpool which plays host to it's 3rd Open Championship in the last 20 years. The previous two, won by arguable the best players in the world at that time, could be an indication of what we have in store for this week.Concerted efforts were made by the club and the R&A to toughen this place up a bit. The addition of the devilish short par 3 17th hole, the shifting of a few greens to bring the pot bunkers protecting them more into play, and the slashing of par to 71 have all been noteworthy. The real defense though lies within the conditions. We intend to keep close tabs throughout the week to monitor any potential changes which will be up to the minute detailed in the Nut Hut as they come across the Tour Junkies desk. For a complete, in-depth preview, check out the official course preview Rundown here. Here are some additional cliffnotes to keep in mind about Royal Liverpool:

  • The course is completely flat with almost zero undulation on either the fairways or the greens, everything is right there in front of you.

  • The 10th hole will now play as a 500+ yard par 4 this year and we expect to see some of the higher scoring averages of the week on this hole as the green was designed for the hole to be played as a Par 5.

  • Internal OB that comes into play on 6 holes will be the Major talking point this week and could wreak havoc on a few players who possess a big miss off the tee or on approach shots as it runs all the way to the green on many holes.

  • Early player press conferences have indicated the course conditions are substantially softer this year than the previous 2 Opens won by Tiger and Rory.

  • Many greens possess runoffs that will trickle your golf ball right into the pot bunkers with difficult sand to play out of and a wall of dirt to cover in order to get your ball back on the green.

  • Waist high, unpredictable fescue borders many of the fairways. Missing by 2 yards could be the difference between an easy and very hard shot.

  • Since 2000, if you rule out Tiger Woods, only 3 times has a player ranked inside the top 5 OWGR won the Open.

  • The average OWGR position of winners over the last 15 years has been 24th.
