The Memorial HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The Memorial

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. The Memorial Tournament is a special week annually on the PGA Tour Schedule. With newly minted elevated status, not that it need it, the majority of the world's best players will once again be making the voyage to the difficult Muirfield Village setup. The course has undergone extensive renovations in recent years, but ultimately still provides a complete test that will require multiple elite skill sets to prevail as winner. Most recently, we have seen success come from the top players as winners include Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay, and Collin Morikawa while if you look more long term, there have absolutely been some longshots and young players notch their breakthrough PGA Tour victory at this event. For a complete "Rundown of the Memorial" of the course and tournament, make sure to check out latest article by our guy Nate. Here are some of the most important tidbits to remember:

  • The difficulty of this course is ultimately defined by the firmness and speed of the Bent Grass Greens. When it get's baked out, expect Carnage. In 2020, during the final rounds when the greens we're super firm, only one player in the field was able to break 70!

  • On many holes the fairway bunkers were placed further from the tees and fairways became pinched the further that you hit the ball. Nicklaus was attempting to dissuade the Bryson approach on just bombing it over all the trouble without penalty.

  • Very difficult ARG course. Last year this was the differentiating factor the ultimately separated Horschel from the others in the top 5.

  • Fairways are wide, you hit nearly 75% of them, but the penalty for an offline miss is extremely penal at Muirfield Village.

  • Historic cutline is between +3 to +4.

  • Players have mentioned that restructuring of the greens on the par 5s does not give you an advantage in terms of going for the green in 2 shots. Often times, it is advantageous to layup to around 80 yards.

  • Although the course is now equipped with sub air systems on the greens, pay attention to weather closely as afternoon Ohio summer showers tend to come down hard and can really soften things up which will provide substantially better scoring conditions.
