Genesis 2023 HP
HP 🍑 for The Genesis Invitational
If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.
Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. It's ridiculously tough to try and top last week's elevated WMPO Tournament, but the best way is to toss us another elevated status event this week and throw in Tiger Woods. Bang! The Genesis Invitations annually provides us with probably the best non-major tournament on the PGA Tour Schedule, and the new 20 Million dollar purse that is in place for 2023 should only continue to bring the best out of the top-end talent on the PGA Tour. Here are some interesting tidbits to keep in mind when doing your research on Riviera Country Club this week:
While not the most narrow, statistically Riviera CC had the toughest fairways to hit last year on Tour, with an average of only 49.2% last season.
2nd Largest greens on Tour yet very tough in terms of GIR rates.
Typically the closest course setup we see to Major Championship levels, put in place by Tiger Woods to provide players the best prep for upcoming Major SZN
Do NOT underestimate the importance of putting on these fast, slopey, tricky, pure POA green surfaces. It's one reason experience around here matters more than normal.
4 of the last 5 winners have come into the week 50/1+ in the betting market.
90% of the winners since 2005 had played in the Genesis Open at least 4 prior times before their win.
Riviera features some of the deepest and most difficult bunkers on tour to get up and down from.
DataGolf has Riviera near the very top in terms of courses where experience / course history play a decent role in success.
Kikuya grass is rather unique. It's sticky and difficult to chip out of. It's very common in Australia and South Africa. Torrey Pines is one of the few places that features Kikuya in the fairways and rough.
Per Justin Ray, recent winners here have averaged 2x more strokes gained around the green than the average event on the PGA TOUR.
