The 3M Open HP 2023

HP 🍑 for The 3M Open

If golf research were sexual...you'd be rounding 2nd base after this.

Here are a few key things to know that may not have been covered on the podcast enough. Keep these in mind when narrowing down your bets and/or player pool. What a weekend it was Savannah's very own Brian Harman capturing the Claret Jug in Hoylake. No rest for the weary as players board an international flight to Blaine Minnesota for the 3M Open. TPC Twin cities plays the familiar host role on a long but score-able golf course that features plenty of water. The overheads look like the place belongs somewhere in the swamps of Florida and has played like it recent years, seeing the most water balls of any stop on Tour.Once again our guy Nate has put together a comprehensive course and tournament preview to get you started on your research path for the 3M Open. You can check it out here. Here are some additional cliffnotes and things to keep in mind about the course:

  • For the first time since inception, last year it actually played over par. Mostly due to significant winds and thicker rough that was deployed by the super.

  • Quick but relatively flat and easy to putt Bentgrass greens. The norm for the PGA Tour this time of year, but could be quite different for those who spent a couple of weeks in Europe.

  • 13 total holes with water in play.

  • Leaderboards have shown mixed skill-sets, but Driving distance is key here. The fairways don't really narrow the further you hit it and added distance will present you with shorter clubs into greens providing more birdie opps.

  • Over 7,400 yards and a par 71 presents players with one of the longer course setups they see all year.

  • Abnormally dry conditions should make the rough pretty dry and wispy allowing players to get more spin and better contact out of the rough versus last year which played very wet.

  • Fairways average 35 yards wide, incentivizing bombers. See previous winners like Champ, Finau, Wolff, etc.
